Welcome!
Welcome to our grade nine math class. I’ve got lots of interesting things planned for us this semester. This blog is just one of them. Take a look in the right side bar of the blog and you’ll find some cool math links to explore. They’ll be more later so be sure to keep checking.
Today, we’ll be working together in our community circle and in small groups so that you can help each other learn. Maybe some of you have already been in a community circle in other classes so you know how much fun that can be and how much learning can go on.
The first thing we need to do today is to get to know one another. So, we’ll do an activity called “Partner Introduction”.
Here’s what we’ll do
1. First we’ll form the partner groups. When you came in, I gave you a card with either a 1 or a 2 on it. Now I want everyone to form groups of two so that each group has a person with a 1and a person with a 2 card in it.
2. Decide who will be the interviewer and who will be the interviewed.
3. For one minute, the interviewer will tell his or her partner all kinds of things that he doesn’t know about him – name, number of brothers or sisters, favourite TV program, favourite music etc. The interviewee says nothing at this time. Just listens for the minute.
4. Then for two minutes the interviewee shares with her partner information that he or she feels comfortable sharing with the whole class community. Hint- writing things down might help.
5. The partners then switch and repeat the process.
6. Then we form our community circle and share what we’ve learned about one another.
7. After all the introductions, we’ll have an opportunity to reflect on the activity.
Tomorrow, we’ll continue to get to know one another and develop our classroom agreements.
